The Theory

Dr.Still, the founder of Osteopathy,

believed that the body has the ability to heal itself, by  means of a system called  'self- regulation'. He believed that fluid (lymphatics and blood), is our primary pathway for health. These fluids carry vital elements needed to build a healthy body and remove toxins.

Any restriction that interrupts this flow will therefore interfere with our health and ability to heal.

The Osteopathic Manual Practitioner (D.O.M.P.),

evaluates the position, mobility and vitality of the body tissues, using their hands to palpate. Interpreting the information they receive will give them clues on the health or dysfunction of the tissue.

The Evaluation

Evaluation is a combination of examining the following:

case history, presenting complaints and treatment goals.

It includes observations in posture,

gait, biomechanical tests, soft tissue evaluation, visceral

and cranial palpation.

The treatment approach focuses on identifying all the areas

that are contributing to the discomfort.

The next step is to address these areas. A variety of techniques are used to improve body mechanics, performance, reduce pain, strain, and enhance overall well being.

The Sequence

The Canadian College of Osteopathy teaches a methodical protocol

that prioritizes the physical issues that concern the client.

They are addressed from the most important to the least.

This means that they will treat the most severe dysfunction they find

and then gradually move onto areas that have the least issues.

Each area that has been determined to need treatment

will be addressed in the treatment session using

an appropriate treatment plan.
